Friday 27th January 2023
Some things are too important to forget, their memory must be kept alive. The flame of memory ever-lasting on the renewed wick of a forever-burning candle. Holocaust Memorial Day is one such thing.
The lives that were taken are an unimaginable loss. The people gone, so much to give, to love, to live. Their loss tears a rip in the fabric of our society. But we can honour their memory, remember who they were and dream what they could have been. We can give voice to their hopes and their wishes.
Holocaust Memorial Day remembers all the lives taken by genocide: the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The event is held on the 27th January to mark a specific event: the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. To those imprisoned inside, a light in the darkness was lit that day as Allied troops entered the gates. Hope was renewed.
On the Friday 27th January 2023 at 8pm GMT (15.00 /servertime) I’ll host a small event to remember those gone and honour their wishes. I’ll speak a little about why we do this. For those willing to gather with me, we’ll lift a light in memory, drive the darkness back, if but for a while.
I’ll also speak of Tolkien, of his letter telling the Nazis what he thought of their ideologies. His words were sharp and true. And I’ll give voice to the words of some we lost, it was their wish we do so.
There is a battle-cry of old*, in Sindarin it goes “Lacho calad! Drego morn!” and translated to Westron, “Flame light! Flee darkness!” I think this is a fitting name for this event, taking the core of the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 and this is something I hope to continue for years to come.
If you wish to attend, please RSVP me (Ranatuor) via the in-game mail or IMs.

* The battle-cry was of the men of the Edain, in the north (Beleriand) of Middle-earth, which was lost at the end of the First Age.
