“Lacho Calad! Drego Morn!” - Being the Light in the Darkness (27th January 2021)

“Lacho Calad! Drego Morn!” - Being the Light in the Darkness
27th January 2021
A Remembrance event for Holocaust Memorial Day

Some things are too important to forget, their memory must be kept alive. The flame of memory ever-lasting on the renewed wick of a forever-burning candle. Holocaust Memorial Day is one such thing.

The lives that were taken are an unimaginable loss. The people gone, so much to give, to love, to live. Their loss tears a rip in the fabric of our society. But we can honour their memory, remember who they were and dream what they could have been. We can give voice to their hopes and their wishes.

Holocaust Memorial Day remembers all the lives taken by genocide: the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The event is held on the 27th January to mark a specific event: the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. To those imprisoned inside, a light in the darkness was lit that day as Allied troops entered the gates. Hope was renewed.

Each year Holocaust Memorial Day takes a theme. This year it is to “be the light in the darkness.”

On the Wednesday 27th January 2021 at 8.15pm GMT (15.15 /servertime) I’ll host a small event to remember those gone and honour their wishes. I’ll speak a little about why we do this. For those willing to gather with me, we’ll lift a light in memory, drive the darkness back, if but for a while.

I’ll also speak of Tolkien, of his letter telling the Nazis what he thought of their ideologies. His words were sharp and true. And I’ll give voice to the words of some we lost, it was their wish we do so.

There is a battle-cry of old*, in Sindarin it goes “Lacho calad! Drego morn!” and translated to Westron, “Flame light! Flee darkness!” I think this is a fitting name for this event, taking the core of the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 and this is something I hope to continue for years to come.

If you wish to attend, please contact me (Ranatuor).

Event details
Date: 27th January 2021
Time: 8.15pm GMT or 15.15 /servertime
Location: A private residence in the Falathlorn Homesteads (address given on the day).

Please note, I reserve the right to lock access to the house to an attendee if I feel their manner is disrespectful to the event, the host or the gathered guests.

This is not a RP or RP-lite event, but a commemoration of something important to me and others who feel the same are most welcome to attend. People will be invited to say their own words during the event.

More information about Holocaust Memorial Day can be found here: https://www.hmd.org.uk/

* The battle-cry was of the men of the Edain, in the north (Beleriand) of Middle-earth, which was lost at the end of the First Age.
