TOLKIEN ON THE SOMME – Exhibition

A small but well-presented exhibition written by John Garth, providing fascinating information about Tolkien and his connection with the Fusiliers and his time at the Somme. Objects on display including pistols from the time period and also some great Tolkien items – his application for a temporary commission (October 1916), medical forms and a Lancashire Fusilier Regimental journal pinpointing the moment Tolkien arrived on the front.

John Garth: “I’ll be talking on Tolkien’s war experiences with the Lancashire Fusiliers, as part of the ‘Summer of Tolkien’ at the Fusilier Museum, Bury, Lancashire. The summer’s centrepiece is a new exhibition on Tolkien, for which I’ve written about how the Great War helped to shape Middle-earth.”

“Oxonmoot is an annual event hosted by The Tolkien Society which brings together over 200 Tolkien fans, scholars, students and Society members from across the world. It has been held annually in Oxford since 1974 on a weekend close to Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday (22nd September) and is the key event in the Society’s annual calendar—if you want to come to any Tolkien event, come to Oxonmoot.”

“In 1904 Tolkien’s mother became seriously ill with diabetes, a serious condition back then. One of her sons went to stay with grandparents living nearby and Ronald (J.R.R.Tolkien) went to stay with his soon to be uncle, Edwin Neave, in Hove.
We have only recently found out where they were living, but we already knew where they spent their days, as Edwin Neave was Clerk to the Guardian Assurance Company, based in East Street, Brighton.We must realise that Tolkien was only 12 in 1904, but you will see, through some of his early drawings and comments that there were the beginnings of greatness even at this early age.
Sadly, by the end of the year his mother died and the boys were left orphans under the care of Father Francis Morgan.
Very little is known about Tolkien’s stay in Hove and the wonders of Middle Earth were still dormant in those days, far, far off, resting, waiting to be discovered.”

“A guided introduction to Tolkien, the area of Sarehole and its influence on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Starting at Sarehole Mill in the courtyard at 1pm, the tour guides you around some of the highlights of the key areas around Sarehole that influenced Tolkien in his work, including Moseley Bog, and back again to Sarehole. The tour lasts around 1 hour and thirty minutes and you will be guided back to the Mill.”
